Jeffrey Dahmer’s childhood wasn’t always easy. His parents always had problems with each other, which made Dahmer feel neglected and alone. His father, Lionel Dahmer, spent a lot of time away from home, and his mother, Joyce Dahmer, was often sad. Even Dahmer’s elementary school teacher noticed he had changed. He started acting like a retard. Later, in 1966, Joyce gave birth to Jeffrey’s younger brother, David Dahmer. He was supposed to name him, but things soured between Dahmer when he saw his parents loving and paying more attention to his brother.

When Dahmer’s parents separated, he chose to live with his father, while his mother and younger brother went to live with relatives in Wisconsin. Shortly thereafter, Dahmer brutally kills his first.

After Dahmer was convicted of murdering and mutilating 17 boys and young men, his family’s life changed forever. They continued to be disturbed, and some of their family members moved away to try to forget the past. So, where are Jeffrey Dahmer’s parents and siblings now?

In the early years

Dahmer was born on May 21, 1960 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. He was the first of two sons of his parents. His mother, Joyce Annette (née Flint), was a teletype machine instructor, and his father, Lionel Herbert Dahmer, was a chemistry student at Marquette University and later a research chemist.

Lionel Dahmer’s family is from Germany and Wales and Joyce Dahmer’s is from Norway and Ireland.

Some sources claim that Dahmer was neglected as a child. However, other sources suggest that both of Dahmer’s parents spoiled him as a baby and toddler, with his mother known to be nervous, eager for attention and pity, and to argue with her husband and those who lived near them.

While Dahmer started first grade, Lionel spent most of his time at university. When he was at home, his depressed and depressed wife constantly demanded his attention and spent much time in bed. On at least one occasion, she tried to kill herself using Equanil. Hence, both the parents did not spend much time with their son. He later said that from a young age, he was “unsure of the stability of the family” because he recalled that his parents were very angry with each other and fought a lot when he was young.

Dahmer was an “active and happy child,” but he changed a lot after he underwent surgery for two hernias before his fourth birthday. In elementary school, Dahmer was shy and quiet. One of his teachers later said that he showed early signs of abandonment due to his mother’s illnesses, which worsened during pregnancy with her second child. However, Dahmer had few friends in grade school.

In October 1966 the family moved to Doylestown, Ohio. When Joyce gave birth in December, Jeffrey chose a name for his new brother. He chose David. Lionel earned his degree and began working as an analytical chemist that same year in nearby Akron, Ohio.

Dahmer became interested in dead animals when he was young. He may have developed an interest in dead animals when he was four years old and saw his father digging out animal bones from under the family home. Lionel said that Dahmer was “strangely thrilled” by the noise the bones made and became obsessed with them. He originally called them his “fiddlesticks”. He sometimes looked under and around the family home for more bones. He also looked at the bodies of living animals to see where their bones were.

In 1968, the family moved to Summit County, Ohio, in the town of Bath. This is their third home in two years and sixth since their marriage. The house was on an acre and a half of woods, and Dahmer began collecting large insects such as dragonflies and moths and the bones of small animals such as chipmunks and squirrels in a small hut a short distance from the house. Some of these bones were stored inside the hut in formaldehyde jars.

Two years later, while having chicken for dinner with Lionel, Dahmer asked him what would happen if he put chicken bones in bleach. Lionel was pleased that his son seemed interested in science, so he showed him how to safely bleach and store animal bones. Dahmer used these techniques to preserve the bones he collected. He began collecting dead animals, including roadkill, which he cut up and buried near the hut. Sometimes, he places skulls on top of makeshift crosses. A friend of Dahmer’s said Dahmer told him he was interested in how the animals “fit together.” In 1975, Dahmer beheaded a dead dog, nailed its body to a tree, and stuck the dog’s head on a stick in the woods behind his house. Later, he called a friend to view the scene and said he found the bones by accident.

Lionel taught his son how to preserve animal bones. This made it difficult to talk to her husband and children.

Teens and high school

From the time he was a freshman at Revere High School, Dahmer was considered an eccentric. By the time he was 14, he was drinking beer and hard liquor during the day. He often hides alcohol in his school jacket. Asked why he was drinking Scotch in his morning history class, he told a classmate that the alcohol he was drinking was “my medicine”. The staff thought Dahmer was polite, very intelligent, and even though he didn’t talk much, he got average grades in his first year. He loved to play tennis and was briefly in the high school band.

Dahmer found out he was gay at age 13, but didn’t tell his parents. In her early teens, she had a brief relationship with another young man, but they never met. Dahmer later stated that when she was in her early to mid-teens, she began to fantasize about dominating and controlling a completely submissive male partner. As his masturbation fantasies gradually changed he focused his fantasies on men’s chests and torsos. Over time, these fantasies mixed with separation. When Dahmer was about 16 years old, she had a fantasy of knocking out a certain male jacker she found attractive and then sexually using his body. Dahmer once hid in the bushes with a baseball bat to wait for this man, but he never came. Later, Dahmer said it was the first time he tried to hurt someone.

Although his classmates at RHS thought of him as a loner and oddball, Dahmer became a class clown who often pulled pranks, a practice known as “doing a Dahmer.” These pranks include bleeding and pretending to have seizures or cerebral palsy at school and local shops.

By 1977, Dahmer’s grades were deteriorating, so his parents hired a private tutor, but that didn’t help him much. That same year, her parents went to counseling to try to save their marriage. They continued to fight. In September 1977, Lionel discovered that Joyce was having a minor affair. He and Joyce decided to divorce and told their sons that they wanted to do it amicably. In early 1978, Lionel left home and stayed briefly at a motel on Massillon Road in North Cleveland.

Dahmer dropped out of high school in May 1978. A few weeks before his graduation, one of Dahmer’s teachers found him sitting near the school parking lot drinking several cans of beer. When the teacher threatened to tell the teacher, Dahmer said she had “a lot of problems” at home and that the school’s guidance counselor knew about them. In the spring of that year, Joyce and David left the family home and moved to Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin to live with relatives. Dahmer had just turned 18 and was still living at home with his family. On July 24, 1978, Dahmer’s parents finally separated. Joyce will keep her younger son and receive alimony.
