The movie “Godfather” came out half a century ago. One of the famous lines — “Keep your friends close and your enemies closer” — rings true for Tom Brady today. When he’s not retired, he’s scheduled to face rivals Aaron Rodgers and Patrick Mahomes in back-to-back games, so it would be surprising if he circles Weeks 3 and 4 on the calendar. That may be especially true for Brady. No one can touch his GOAT status, but this could be his final chance to assert his bragging rights over his contemporaries, two quarterbacks regularly mentioned in “best QB in the league” debates.

QB Royalty

Before we get into Brady’s dominance of these matchups, let’s revel in the fact that the three most decorated quarterbacks are going toe-to-toe in today’s game.

Brady, Rodgers and Mahomes are the only three active players in the league with an NFL MVP and a Super Bowl ring. Nobody’s falling: They’ve won four of the last five league MVP awards. They hold three of the top four all-time touchdown-to-interception ratios. There are plenty of superstar QBs in today’s game, but since Mahomes became the Chiefs’ starter in 2018, the trio has ranked 1-2-3 in touchdown passes.

You may have heard them inscribed their names in the history books:

  • Brady is the NFL’s all-time leader in wins (7), Super Bowl MVPs (5), games won (245), touchdown passes (626) and passing yards (84,922), among a billion other records.

  • Rodgers may be the most talented QB of all time, has the best touchdown-to-interception ratio of all time, and is second only to Peyton Manning in MVPs (4).

  • Mahomes has the most passes in league history and is the youngest QB to win the Super Bowl MVP.

bottom line. They could be down to three of the greatest quarterbacks ever, and they all tango over the next two weeks. Hook!

Brady’s bragging rights

This sets up an almost unprecedented QB double dip. It’s only the second time in NFL history that a QB with an MVP and a Super Bowl MVP has started consecutive games against an MVP and a Super Bowl MVP QB.

And wouldn’t you know it, the other event was the same trio in the same order, and the last time they all played each other. In the 2020 postseason, Brady and the Buccaneers will face Rodgers and co. Mahomes and the Chiefs in the NFC Championship Game.

You have to imagine the two succeeding in a little revenge against Brady. You may recall that Rodgers didn’t have the ball in his hands in the 2020 NFC Championship Game. Down by eight points, the Packers elected to kick a field goal with about two minutes left in the fourth down instead of putting the ball in the league MVP’s hands. Green Bay never got the ball back. The next week, Mahomes was saving his life on every play in the worst loss of his career. He posted the worst passer rating and the worst loss of his career in that Super Bowl (31-9).

The beauty of two wins for Brady: He strengthened his own trophy while denying both of his peers a second ring. He is now 3-0 in the playoffs against Rodgers and Mahomes. He beat Mahomes in the 2018 AFC Championship Game en route to his sixth ring. So, in fact, every time he faced these two in the playoffs, he hoisted the Lombardi Trophy. And the kicker, in true Brady fashion, was that all three hits came from a quarterback.

Brady’s overall resume against the pair makes him one. Between the regular season and the playoffs, 30 quarterbacks have started a game against both Rodgers and Mahomes. Guess who is the only person to win against both? TB12, of course. He is 3-1 against Rodgers and 3-2 against Mahomes.

If all of that wasn’t enough, Brady has as many rings in his 40s as Rodgers and Mahomes in their combined careers (two).

Brady vs. Rodgers: Round 5

Rodgers will get first crack at TB12 on Sunday. Perhaps the only thing he has over Brady are MVPs, including the last laugh. He picked up his fourth win in 2021, beating Brady 39-10 in the voting.

They also have a lot of mutual respect for each other. Rodgers was asked about the challenge facing Brady following Green Bay’s win over the Bears on Sunday. “Obviously, Tommy is a legend.” Brady paid tribute on his podcast, Let’s go!,They have one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time with Aaron leading them.”

Together, their seven MVP awards are tied for all-time by a quarterback. Each of the previous three matchups involved Peyton Manning against either Brady or Rodgers.

QB matchups with 7 NFL MVP awards

  • 2022: Aaron Rodgers (4) vs. Tom Brady (3)

  • 2015: Tom Brady (2) vs. Peyton Manning (5)

  • 2015: Aaron Rodgers (2) vs. Peyton Manning (5)

  • 2014: Peyton Manning (5) vs. Tom Brady (2)

As with most things, when they go head-to-head, that’s to Brady’s advantage. He has excellent numbers in every major category. Rodgers’ only win came in their first matchup in 2014, a 26-21 Packers win in Green Bay. There will be plenty at stake on Sunday as the two teams square off in a potential NFC Championship preview.

Brady vs. Mahomes: Round 6

When Brady and Rodgers meet for the fifth time, the Brady-Mahomes rivalry will actually surpass that of rivalry No. 1. 6 next week. Both players have filled stat sheets in these games, but Brady has the all-important 3-2 advantage in the win column, including a blowout victory in Super Bowl LV. Mahomes is likely to even the series in Week 4 in their last possible meeting.

When Brady finally decides to retire, Rodgers and Mahomes may still be chasing his ghost. Mahomes is the biggest threat to Brady’s all-time records, but neither is out of bounds.

  • Assuming Brady continues his career pace but retires after this season, he would finish with 656 passing TDs and 88,981 passing yards.

  • Including 2022, Rodgers would need to play six more seasons until age 44 to reach those marks.

  • Mahomes would need to play 12 more seasons, until age 38, to reach those marks, both of which are within reach.
