Christian McCaffrey saw a big workload for the Panthers in Week 2 against the Giants, totaling 19 touches as one of Carolina’s best weapons in an otherwise poor offensive display. But the star running back is a question mark approaching Sunday’s matchup with the Saints. McCaffrey returned to the injury report Thursday after appearing in just 10 games over the previous two seasons. The former Pro Bowler is still expected to play in Week 3 against the Saints. According to the team’s official websiteBut was limited in practice with ankle stiffness.

Ankle and hamstring injuries accounted for McCaffrey’s previous extended absence. Depending on his practice availability on Friday, the running back could be officially listed as questionable for Sunday’s divisional game. He also appeared on the injury report prior to Week 1 after his foot was cut by a cleat during practice, but he was a full participant at the time.

However, McCaffrey himself isn’t concerned.

“I feel good,” he said after practice. to Panthers.com, before joking about its durability. “I think at this point, if I’m going to take a leak during training, I’ll finish the report.”

Regardless, it is important to monitor growth. McCaffrey is generally one of the NFL’s best all-purpose players and, when healthy, has recorded 80 catches in each of his first three seasons. He averaged seven yards per carry in Week 2 against the Giants. But he hasn’t played a full season in three years, and the Panthers (0-2) could use all the offensive help they can get.

If McCaffrey doesn’t suit up Sunday or takes a reduced workload, second-year backup Chuba Hubbard could be in line for an improvement in carries. Ditto for former Texans and Titans reserve D’Onta Foreman with four carries in the first two games.
