The New York Mets set an MLB record with 106 hit batters in 2022

MILWAUKEE — The New York Mets set a major league record with 106 hit batters this season as Mark Canha homered twice and Louis Guillorme once in a 6-0 loss to the Milwaukee Brewers.

New York has one more hit than the 2021 Cincinnati Reds.

“It’s like a broken record at this point,” Canha said. “Now when it happens we roll our eyes and move on. There’s nothing you can do but take advantage of it and hurt it, and that’s what you can do. Yeah, sure, we’re frustrated. It’s not a pattern. A big thing happened to your team.”

Mets manager Buck Showalter talked about how many times his players were hit. He signaled the ball after Guillorme was hit on the right leg by Jake Cousins’ slider in the ninth.

Asked what he planned to do with the ball, Showalter joked, “It would be obscene to tell you,” adding: “I gave it to the hitting coaches. They can do whatever they want.”

The Mets pitched in other ways on Wednesday as well. Mets center fielder Brandon Nimmo left after the first inning after injuring his left quadriceps while stealing second base. Left fielder Jeff McNeil slammed his right wrist against the chain-link fence in a failed attempt to catch Brosseau’s drive.

Showalter said he expects both players to be fine, but Nimmo will be tested Thursday.

“We’ll get some imaging tomorrow to see what we’re doing,” Showalter said. “You’re always worried, but I’m sure his warning will reap some good.”

Kanha was hit in the groin in the third and near the ribs in the fifth. He has a major league-high 24 hits this year and tied Seattle’s Ty France with 27 while playing for the Oakland Athletics.

“I’m close to the plate, I’m not moving,” Canha said. “We have a lot of good hitters, dangerous hitters, and you have to field good hitters, and we’re hitting a lot.”

Last year’s record 2,112 batters were hit, and 1,984 in 2019. It had been hit 1,875 times by Wednesday with two weeks to go.

“Teams have to try to find ways to get us out, and I think that’s part of the way, trying to get inside,” Nimmo said, “and when that happens you get hit.”

Cincinnati pitchers have a record 99 hit batters this year, one more than the Chicago Cubs did last year.
