Kansas City, Mo. — Seattle Mariners outfielder Julio Rodriguez, a leading candidate for AL Rookie of the Year honors, was placed on the 10-day injured list Friday with a lower back strain.

Seattle holds the third and final wild-card spot, a half-game behind Tampa Bay and four games ahead of Baltimore. Recalled outfielder Taylor Trammell from Triple-A Tacoma.

Rodriguez left Thursday’s win at Oakland after suffering back tightness in the first inning. The 21-year-old leads the team in home runs (27), runs (81) and total bases (251) and is second in RBIs (73) and stolen bases (25). He is the only rookie to be named an All-Star this season.

Jarrett Kelenick replaced Rodriguez in center field for Seattle’s game at Kansas City. Third baseman JP Crawford took Rodriguez’s familiar leadoff spot in the batting order.

“I expected more [Kelenic’s] The reps will get to the corners, but now that Julio is out, he’ll be playing center field,” Mariners manager Scott Servais said. “We’re going to let him run with it.”

Trammell has played in 41 games for Seattle this year. He hit .333 with five homers and 12 RBI in 22 games for Tacoma.
