First-half goals from Ciel Laurin and Jonathan David helped World Cup contenders Canada beat hosts Qatar 2-0 in a friendly in Vienna on Friday.
Laurin opened the scoring in the fourth minute when he headed home from Sam Adegukbe’s looping cross, and David chased down a loose ball nine minutes later after goalkeeper Saad Al Sheib failed to deal with a cross.

Qatar used a deep defensive line and offered little attack, with Abdulaziz Hadem’s powerful shot from distance tipped over by Milan Borgen, their best effort of the opening half.
Canada manager John Herdmann brought on Bayern Munich’s Alphonso Davies after the break and made wholesale changes in search of a third, but they were thwarted by Qatar who managed a late consolation through Karim Boudief.
Canada, who last appeared at the World Cup in 1986, play Uruguay in a friendly on Tuesday and Qatar next face Chile.
