Berhalder’s side were without their talisman Christian Pulisic, who was announced before kickoff after the Chelsea forward failed to train with the national side.
Japan took the lead in the 24th minute after slippage by the United States, Hidemasa Morita out for an unmarked Kamada. The goal was initially ruled offside, but ultimately stood after a VAR check.
Berhalder introduced several substitutes in the second half, but they were unable to help the American side, while Arsenal goalkeeper Matt Turner had to be alert on several occasions to keep Japan from extending their lead.
Mitoma scored Japan’s second goal in the 88th minute to condemn the United States to an embarrassing defeat ahead of the World Cup.
