Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Olivier Giroud kept France alive in their hopes of staying in the top tier of the Nations League as they beat Austria 2-0 at home on Thursday.

Mbappe opened the scoring with another stunning goal, Giroud again showing coach Didier Deschamps he is more than a third-choice forward, sealing victory for the world champions with a header.

France, who travel to Denmark on Sunday, move up to third in Group 1 with five points from as many games.

However, the victory came at a price as defender Jules Counte and goalkeeper Mike Mignon suffered injuries.

Having lost two and drawn two of their previous four games, the hosts came out on top at the Stade de France.

Mbappe fired a shot into the top corner in the second minute, but the effort was disallowed for offside.

After a quick mix-up between Antoine Griezmann and Mbappe, Aurelian Tchouameni’s effort was saved by Austrian keeper Patrick Bentz. Les Blues Concentrated on pressure.

Defender Kante was the latest injury to an injury-hit squad when he left the pitch with a muscle problem, and Mignon was replaced by Alphonse Areola at half-time with a calf problem.

Mbappe, denied by Benz after a one-two with Giroud, harassed the Austrian defense with his pace and created space for his team-mates, with Jonathan Glass missing a goal early in the second half.

Mbappe broke the deadlock with a cool finish after beating five defenders following Giroud’s perfect pass.

This put Austria into action, but their lack of precision in the box meant France scored again.

Giroud scored his 49th international goal in the 65th minute from Griezmann’s pinpoint cross, twice shy of Thierry Henry’s national record.

Ousmane Dembele replaced the AC Milan striker to a standing ovation from the Stade de France crowd, leaving Deschamps who only called on Giroud in Benzema’s absence in a tricky decision ahead of November’s World Cup.
