Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Khelat on Friday announced that he will contest the Congress president election and will step down as chief minister if elected as the party chief.
“It has been decided that I will contest (for the post of Congress president). I will fix the date (for filing nomination) soon. Given the current state of the country, it is necessary for the opposition parties to be strong,” Gehlot said. ANI quoted news agency as saying.
Speaking to ABB news agency, Ashok Khelat said that he would resign as the chief minister of Rajasthan if elected as the Congress president.
Asked if he has chosen his successor for the post of Rajasthan chief minister, Gehlot said the decision will be taken according to the party structure.
Earlier, ANI had quoted Ashok Khelat as saying: “I requested him (Congress MP Rahul Gandhi) several times to accept everyone’s proposal to become Congress president. He made it clear that no one from the Gandhi family should be the next president.”
Earlier, the Rajasthan chief minister had hinted that he might throw his hat in the ring if former president Rahul Gandhi did not agree to take over the reins of the party.
Gelat is believed to have the support of the current leadership. However, Congress president Sonia Gandhi reportedly told both Khelat and Tharoor that she would remain “neutral” in the election.
