College football picks, schedule: Predictions against the spread, odds for the first 25 games in Week 4

With the final weekend coming up in September, conference drama begins around the college football landscape. The top 25 teams debut in conference play for the 2022 season. Practices tend to be tight games and close scores, as teams with intimate knowledge of each other serve as better litmus tests than the cannon fodder of conference play.

In total, three conference games will feature a pair of top-25 teams. No. 10 Arkansas, no. 11 Tennessee and no. No. 21 Wake Forest expects more respect against ranked conference opponents in their respective division races. In the Big Ten, the no. 3 Ohio State and no. 4 Michigan will look to continue their strong start against teams they have dominated in recent years. Closing out the evening is a Big 12 battle between No. 6 Oklahoma and Kansas State, which has turned into a drop game for the Sooners lately.

Be sure to stay tuned to CBS Sports throughout the day for college football coverage from the opening kickoff. Let’s take a look at our expert picks for the best games in Week 4.

Odds by Caesars Sportsbook | East at all times

Special game | Michigan Wolverines vs. Maryland Terrapins

Noon | fox, fuboTV (try it for free) — The Terrapins will give Michigan a much deeper challenge than any opponent up front, especially under their aggressive passing attack. However, the Wolverines have been completely clean against poor competition in their first three games. Many are waiting for Michigan to make the switch to JJ McCarthy under center, so don’t be surprised to see the Wolverines take a few more snaps than usual. It could be a backdoor cover, but it’s a cover. Prediction: Michigan -17 — Shehan Jayaraja

Special game | Wake Forest Demon Deacons vs. Clemson Tigers

Noon | ABC, fuboTV (try it for free) — Wake Forest has either outright wins or at least more competitive results against every ACC team except the Tigers. Throughout the College Football Playoff era, we’ve been dazzled by some of the quarterbacks and wide receivers that have come through Clemson, but the defensive line has been the most consistent unit. That defensive front overwhelmed Wake Forest for years, disrupting all the complex and well-crafted aspects of the offense. I think that trend continues, as does the trend of double-digit wins. Prediction: Clemson -7 — Chip Patterson

Special game | Tennessee Volunteers vs. Florida Gators

3:30 pm | CBS,, CBS Sports AppFlorida has won 16 of the last 17 games in the series, and the Volunteers have won this game by more than 10 points just once in the last 30 years. History aside, Tennessee’s position as a double-digit favorite seems to be overestimating a win over Pittsburgh and underestimating Florida’s win over Utah. The Gators have looked awful the past two weeks, but the roster has enough talent to keep things close against a rebuilding Vols program over No. 1 — as shown in the win over the Utes. 11 rank may suggest. Prediction: Florida +10.5 — David Cobb

Special game | Texas A&M Aggies vs. Arkansas Razorbacks

7 pm | ESPN, fuboTV (try it for free) — Give me razorbacks, give me big ones. Raheem Sanders, the SEC’s leading rusher, has been a terror between the tackles and out in space. K.J. Along with Jefferson, he wears this defensive front and leaves late. On the other side of the ball, a stout Hawks pass rush will take advantage of a struggling Aggies defensive line to exploit Max Johnson and the offense behind the sticks. That’s a recipe for disaster for Johnson and a passing game that has yet to show any sign of life. Prediction: Arkansas (+1.5) — Barrett Sally

Special game | Ohio State Buckeyes vs. Wisconsin Badgers

7:30 pm | ABC, fuboTV (try it for free) — While I have a lot of respect for Wisconsin defensive coordinator Jim Leonhardt, I don’t have nearly the same level of confidence in Wisconsin’s offense to believe that Ohio State will do the same things it did to its last pair of opponents. Continue in this game. Until Graham Mertz proves to me that he can be trusted against better opponents, I wouldn’t bet on him being the same. Place points with Buckeyes. Prediction: Ohio State -18 — Tom Fornelli

Special game | Oklahoma Sooners vs. Kansas State Wildcats

8 pm | fox, fuboTV (try it for free) — Kansas State has been quietly playing Oklahoma since Chris Kleiman took over the program in 2019. The Wildcats beat OU in Kleiman’s first two seasons and played the Sooners within one score in 2021. There was hope that this would be the best team. Kleiman’s tenure, but an inexplicable loss to Tulane cut it short. However, expect the Wildcats to keep the game within two scores. Prediction: Kansas State +13 — Shehan Jayaraja
