new team Carson Wentz looks back on his time with the Eagles, what went wrong, and the fans' experience facing the former team

Nearly two years have passed since Carson Wentz and the Philadelphia Eagles divorced, ending a five-year marriage that featured plenty of highs and lows. Despite all the early success, numerous injuries, the emergence of Nick Foles and a disastrous 2020 season led to Wentz’s request for a trade from Philadelphia.

The road hasn’t been easy for Wentz since his departure, as he’s been on the third team in his last three years. Wentz appears to have found a home with the Washington Commanders as he faces his former team for the first time. He downplayed the first game against the Eagles, but noted his time playing for the team in which he played a key role in Philadelphia’s first Super Bowl title.

“It was a lot of fun. It was a lot of fun,” Wentz said Wednesday. “Obviously we had a lot of success there. Winning the Super Bowl there was really special. It was really cool to be a part of it. It’s a great city, great crowd, great experience. I definitely cherish my time there but obviously now being on the other end, it’s a little It’s going to be different. It was a fun two years when I was there. I definitely loved my time there.”

The divorce from Philadelphia was a messy one, starting with Wentz’s performance in the 2020 season. Among the 35 quarterbacks to qualify in the major passing categories, Wentz ranked 34th in completion percentage (57.4), 33rd in yards per attempt (6.0), and 34th in quarterback rating (72.8). He tied for the NFL lead in interceptions thrown (15) and was sacked for the most of any quarterback in the league (50) — despite playing in just 13 games. Wentz’s bad throw percentage (qualifies as a bad throw to a receiver) is the second highest in the league for quarterbacks with more than 400 passes attempted (21.7%).

The Eagles moved on from head coach Doug Pederson and committed themselves to Wentz, but he wanted to move on. Wentz was eventually traded to Indianapolis as the Eagles received a 2022 first-round pick and a 2021 third-round pick. Wentz was traded before the Eagles used picks that helped land AJ Brown in last year’s draft.

How did things go south in Philadelphia?

“I don’t know,” Wentz said. “It’s a big question that I’ve answered many times … I think as you grow, your perspective changes, you know. I always look back. Man, I could have been better here. I could have been. As a person, as a teammate, a lot of the things you do are a You take it for granted.

“I definitely loved my time there. It was definitely a wild ride in many, many ways.”

Wentz is off to a strong start in Washington, completing 65.5% of his passes for 650 yards with seven touchdowns and three interceptions for a 100.3 passer rating. Not only does Wentz lead the league in touchdown passes, he’s also the only player with 10 completions of 20-plus yards this year.

He’s comfortable with his new franchise, which is all that matters at this point. Philadelphia is in the past, even if Wentz has to face the Eagles twice a year.

“It was fun. It was really fun,” Wentz said. It’s a younger team, hungry with a lot of guys, hungry to win. It was fun to be a part of, in a different leadership role as one of the older guys in the locker room.

“We’re just starting here, but we’ll see a level of consistent play as we go through here.”
