New Delhi. Home Minister Amit Shah said on Thursday that internal security is the top priority of the Modi government. He stressed that several steps have been taken to ensure this, including improved border surveillance and a campaign against counterfeit currency. Inaugurating the new building of Delhi Police Headquarters on Jai Singh Road at a cost of Rs 286 crore, Amit Shah stressed on the need to bring about a change in the image of the police.

Home Minister Amit Shah said, ‘Internal security is on the top of the priority list of the Modi government. To improve security at the borders and to crack down on counterfeit notes, we have started several works. Shah also paid tribute to the Delhi Police personnel who laid down their lives in the 2001 Parliament attack and Inspector MC Sharma, who was martyred in the Batla House encounter.

On the importance of police in the development of the country, he said that stable law and order is most important in the economic and social development of the country. Shah said the image of the police is portrayed in a negative way in the popular media but it is rarely shown that the officers and jawans who sacrifice their lives round the clock to ensure the safety of citizens.

“Such a negative image is projected to lower the morale of our police force,” he said. There is a need to improve the image of the police. The Home Minister said that the government is working under the vision of Prime Minister Narendra Modi to rectify these situations in a “planned, time bound and scientific manner”.

Home Minister Amit Shah said that the police need to be proactive and accountable for redressal of public grievances. He cautioned the Delhi Police that the new building was not a guarantee of improvement in the police force. He said, ‘This goal can be achieved only by making the police force public service-oriented. Only then will the public image improve and the efforts the force is making will yield the desired positive results.
